Did the LDS Church Rewrite Its Own History? Polygamy, Censorship & Hidden Records
Welcome to the Mormon News Roundup.
Tonight, we take a deep investigative look at the historical record of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and examine claims that early policies, doctrines, and historical records were altered, revised, censored, or withheld from the public.
In this episode, we explore:
• The reversal on polygamy — How teachings about plural marriage changed dramatically from the 19th century to the modern Church.
• The Word of Wisdom — Historical accounts of Joseph Smith and other early leaders, along with allegations that references to alcohol and tobacco were later removed or rewritten in published histories.
• Censorship and book burning — The controversy surrounding revisions to Lucy Mack Smith's biography, the destruction of critical literature, and allegations that missionaries participated in campaigns to remove unfavorable books from public libraries.
• Restricted historical archives — The long-running controversy over access to diaries and other primary documents, including records concerning early LDS leaders and the Council of Fifty.
The larger question is one of historical transparency: What happens to our understanding of the past when primary sources are edited, suppressed, restricted, or presented differently to later generations?
