The Firsthand Account That Shook Mormon Origins: Isaac Hale on Joseph Smith

Watch on YouTube

Welcome back to the Mormon News Roundup.

Today we’re examining one of the most important firsthand historical accounts of Joseph Smith’s early life: the 1834 affidavit of Isaac Hale.

Isaac Hale was the father of Emma Hale Smith and Joseph Smith’s father-in-law. His testimony provides a rare early outside perspective on Joseph Smith’s activities before and during the translation of the Book of Mormon.

In this account, Hale describes Joseph Smith’s involvement in treasure seeking, the use of a seer stone placed in a hat, and his early relationship with Emma and her family. He also recounts tensions surrounding Joseph and Emma’s marriage, which took place without Hale’s approval, and his later observations of the Book of Mormon translation process involving scribes such as Martin Harris and Oliver Cowdery.

This episode walks through the affidavit in detail so viewers can understand what Isaac Hale claimed to witness firsthand, and how those claims fit into the broader historical record of early Mormonism.
