The Book of Abraham Examined: What Do Archaeology, Egyptology, and History Really Reveal?
What does the evidence really tell us about the Book of Abraham?
For decades, critics and believers have debated whether Joseph Smith’s Book of Abraham was an authentic ancient record translated from Egyptian papyri—or whether the evidence tells a very different story.
In this documentary, we take a closer look at the history of the Book of Abraham, the Joseph Smith Papyri, and the claims surrounding its translation. We’ll hear from scholars, including Mormon anthropologist Thomas Murphy, FARMS researcher Dr. Daniel Peterson, biblical archaeologist Gabriel Barkay, and other researchers who have examined questions surrounding Mormon scripture, archaeology, Egyptology, and history.
The Book of Mormon has long been defended through claims that archaeology may eventually provide confirmation of its historical narratives. But the Book of Abraham presents a different challenge: we have surviving Egyptian papyri connected to Joseph Smith, allowing scholars to examine the translation claims directly.
What do Egyptologists say about the papyri?
Do the surviving fragments match the Book of Abraham text?
How have LDS scholars responded to the evidence?
And what does this controversy mean for understanding Joseph Smith’s translation claims?
Rather than relying on online arguments or simplified talking points, this video examines the historical sources, scholarly discussions, and evidence surrounding one of the most debated texts in the Latter-day Saint tradition.
