Music Was My Identity. Then I Lost It.
For most of my life, music wasn't just a hobby—it was who I was.
I grew up in a family with deep musical roots stretching back to William Pitt, the famed Nauvoo brass band leader who crossed the plains with the Mormon pioneers. From childhood violin lessons and the Salt Lake Children's Choir to becoming concertmaster in high school, earning degrees in music education and orchestral conducting, teaching in public schools, conducting orchestras, and performing with the Utah Symphony, Orchestra at Temple Square, and numerous professional and semi-professional ensembles, music defined my life.
Then, almost without realizing it, that chapter came to an end.
In this deeply personal video, I share the story of my musical journey, the opportunities I was fortunate to have, the difficult transitions that followed, and why my violin now sits untouched in its case. It's a story about identity, purpose, regret, and learning to find joy in watching the next generation carry on the legacy.
If you've ever had to walk away from something you loved, I hope this story resonates with you.
