Dr. Randy Bell Left Mormonism—But Did He Leave Bad Theology Behind? An Open Letter
Randy Bell is one of the most recognizable voices in the ex-Mormon community. Known as the "Master of Disaster," he has built a large following through his books, podcasts, and outspoken criticism of the LDS Church.
Recently, Randy and I found ourselves on opposite sides of a discussion involving David McConkie, grandson of Mormon apostle Bruce R. McConkie. During that exchange, Randy expressed a desire that David would ultimately end up in hell.
That comment raises a much larger question.
Can any human being truly deserve eternal conscious torment?
In this video, I examine the doctrine of hell, the moral implications of eternal punishment, and what I see as a significant inconsistency in how many former Mormons evaluate religious truth claims.
Joseph Smith is frequently condemned—and often for good reason—for behavior that many consider unethical or disturbing. But if we apply those same moral standards consistently, what do we do with biblical passages in which God commands, permits, or sanctions acts of violence, sexual coercion, forced marriage, and collective punishment?
Why are some moral problems treated as disqualifying while others are explained away?
I also explore broader questions about Christian theology, biblical authority, critical thinking, and whether traditional doctrines such as eternal hell and the Trinity can withstand the same scrutiny often applied to Mormonism.
This video is not a defense of David McConkie.
It is not a defense of Joseph Smith.
It is an argument for intellectual consistency.
If we're going to challenge harmful ideas, we should be willing to challenge them wherever they appear.
