Do LDS Leaders Teach Toxic Perfectionism?
Many current and former members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have described feeling weighed down by a culture of perfectionism. They speak of constant pressure to do more, be more, and never feeling "good enough."
In this video, I step back from the debate and let the historical record speak for itself.
Rather than relying on secondhand summaries or isolated quotations, you'll hear directly from senior LDS leaders—primarily through General Conference messages—as they discuss perfection, worthiness, obedience, and becoming like Christ. These are the talks many people point to when discussing what has been called *toxic perfectionism*.
The video also examines an interesting contrast:
* Elder Jeffrey R. Holland's 2017 General Conference address, where he argues that Satan exploits feelings of demanded perfection.
* President Spencer W. Kimball's 1974 BYU devotional, which presents a much more demanding view of personal perfection.
* Modern psychological perspectives on perfectionism, shame, depression, and feelings of worthlessness.
Have Church teachings on perfection changed over time? Are these messages being misunderstood? Or do they contribute to unhealthy expectations for many members?
