Listening to Mormon Stories Was Healing. But did The Platform BECOME the Problem?
Mormon Stories mattered. The stories mattered.
For many of us, hearing people finally say out loud what had been unspeakable was life-saving. Abuse. Coercion. Humiliation. Spiritual violence. Naming harm publicly — without dismissal or minimization — broke isolation and gave people language for what they had survived.
That truth remains.
But this video asks a harder question that ex-Mormon spaces continue to avoid:
What happened after the stories became infrastructure?
Because infrastructure creates power.
And power, when left unexamined, reproduces harm — even when the original intent was good.
This is not an attack on storytelling.
It is not a call for silence, erasure, or cancellation.
It is a demand that the work of deconstruction be completed.
In this video, we examine:
How survivor storytelling became centralized, branded, and monetized
Why platforms accumulate authority while storytellers absorb the cost
How unexamined privilege survives church exit — especially for straight, cis, white men
Why “niceness,” “grace,” and “healing” are often weaponized against women, queer people, and people of color
How benevolent sexism functions as control, not care
Why anger is pathologized while comfort is protected
And how ex-Mormon spaces can quietly replicate Mormon discipline with secular language
This conversation holds two truths at once:
People can be grateful their stories were told and later realize they were harmed by how those stories were handled.
Delayed recognition is not betrayal.
It is awakening.
And yes — this is a direct appeal to John Dehlin and the communities built around Mormon Stories:
We are not asking you to disappear.
We are asking you to look honestly at how power operates once a movement stabilizes.
To stop diagnosing critics.
To stop hiding behind gratitude.
To stop protecting comfort at the expense of truth.
Because if a movement built on survivor stories cannot listen when survivors speak again —
then it didn’t dismantle Mormonism.
It just renamed it.
