How Does the Mormon Church Keep Finding Me? Inside the INSANE LDS Tracking System

Watch on YouTube

Former and disengaged members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints often ask the same unsettling question:

“How does the Church keep finding me?”

The answer isn’t coincidence, friendly concern, or divine inspiration—it’s a system.

In this video, we break down a now-removed page from the LDS Church’s internal Tech Wiki that outlined formal procedures for locating “lost” members—those who stop attending or move without updating their records. The responsibility typically falls to ward clerks under the direction of bishops, and the process doesn’t stop just because someone goes silent.

According to the documentation, search efforts may include:

Returned mail verification and forwarding requests
Visiting last known addresses
Contacting neighbors, landlords, or new occupants
Searching online phone books and reverse phone lookups
Checking voter registration, property records, court databases, divorce filings, and criminal records
Even consulting the Social Security Death Index for older members
Most troubling isn’t just how the Church searches—but why it never stops.

This system:
Does not recognize disengagement as a valid choice
Treats absence as a clerical problem to solve, not a decision to respect
Documents and transfers search efforts across leadership changes
Involves third parties without consent, exposing a person’s former religious affiliation
Lacks any clear stopping rule, making persistence the default virtue

Even if the Tech Wiki wasn’t “official doctrine,” it reveals the institutional mindset behind LDS record-keeping: membership is assumed to be permanent unless formally revoked.

The intent may be framed as pastoral care.
The effect feels far closer to surveillance.

In a modern world that increasingly values consent, privacy, and personal autonomy, this approach feels deeply out of step—and explains why so many former members ultimately conclude that the only exit the system truly recognizes is formal resignation.

Healthy institutions respect silence as an answer.
Absence is a decision.
