No, Ex-Mormons Don’t Leave the Church to “Sin” — Here’s the Real Evidence

Watch on YouTube

Why do people actually leave the Mormon Church?

In this video, I react to a TikTok claiming to explain why former members leave—and I push back hard on the myths, caricatures, and misinformation that keep getting recycled in LDS spaces.

Contrary to popular belief, people don’t leave because they “want to sin,” drink coffee, or rebel against moral standards. The data has been clear for over a decade:
Most people leave because they no longer believe the church’s truth claims.

We talk about:
• What the largest exit surveys actually show
• Why “Word of Wisdom” arguments don’t match the evidence
• The lazy stereotype that ex-Mormons just want to drink or smoke
• Church history issues like polygamy, polyandry, the Book of Abraham, racism, and institutional deception
• Mental health impacts—especially on women, LGBTQ+ members, and youth
• Why belief is not evidence, and feelings are not facts
• The difference between respecting people and respecting bad ideas

This isn’t about attacking individuals. It’s about correcting false narratives and taking former members seriously—something the institutional church still refuses to do.

You’re allowed to believe.
But if you’re going to talk about why people leave, you should at least get the reasons right.
