Out of Liberty" (2019), directed by Garrett Batty, is a captivating historical drama that transports viewers to the turbulent times of the early 19th century American frontier. Set against the backdrop of the Missouri Mormon War, the film offers a compelling portrayal of the struggle for justice, freedom, and religious liberty.
The story unfolds in Liberty, Missouri, where a group of Latter-day Saint prisoners, including the enigmatic Joseph Smith Jr., played by Brandon Ray Olive, are held captive by a conflicted sheriff, portrayed by Jasen Wade. As tensions escalate between the imprisoned Mormons and the local townsfolk, the sheriff finds himself caught between his duty to uphold the law and his own moral convictions.
One of the film's greatest strengths lies in its nuanced and multi-dimensional characters. Each member of the ensemble cast delivers a powerful performance, bringing depth and authenticity to their respective roles. Brandon Ray Olive's portrayal of Joseph Smith Jr. is particularly noteworthy, capturing the charisma and resolve of the iconic religious leader.
"Out of Liberty" also excels in its attention to historical detail and period authenticity. From the rugged landscapes of the American frontier to the meticulously recreated sets and costumes, the film immerses viewers in the sights and sounds of the early 19th century.
Furthermore, the film's exploration of themes such as religious persecution, freedom of conscience, and the rule of law resonates deeply in today's world. Through the lens of history, "Out of Liberty" sheds light on timeless issues of justice and human rights, prompting viewers to reflect on the importance of standing up for what is right, even in the face of adversity.
While "Out of Liberty" may not boast the big-budget spectacle of Hollywood blockbusters, its compelling storytelling, strong performances, and powerful themes make it a must-watch for fans of historical dramas. With its gripping narrative and thought-provoking message, the film leaves a lasting impression, reminding viewers of the enduring struggle for liberty and justice that continues to shape the American experience.

Conclusion Gripping, satisfying, action packed, special, these are the words that come to mind when I watched this movie. My expectations were extremely low going into this film, but Garrett Batty delivers a hidden gem; it is a shame that more people haven’t watched Out of Liberty, but I linked to it in the show notes.
