Spoiler alert

"Freetown" (2015) is a film that unfortunately fails to leave a lasting impression due to its tedious pacing, lackluster storytelling, and forgettable characters. Set amidst the backdrop of the Liberian Civil War, the film follows a group of Mormon missionaries as they navigate the dangers of the conflict-torn region.

One of the most significant drawbacks of "Freetown" is its inability to sustain audience engagement. The pacing feels sluggish throughout, with long stretches of monotony punctuated by brief moments of tension or action. This lack of momentum makes it difficult for viewers to remain invested in the story or empathize with the characters.

Furthermore, the film's narrative fails to capitalize on the inherent drama of its setting. While the Liberian Civil War provides a compelling backdrop, the story feels underdeveloped and lacks a sense of urgency. The characters are thinly drawn, with little depth or complexity to make them memorable or relatable.

Despite its shortcomings, "Freetown" does boast some impressive cinematography, capturing the beauty and chaos of Liberia with stunning visuals. However, this alone is not enough to salvage the film from its overall mediocrity.

In conclusion, "Freetown" struggles to hold the attention of its audience due to its boring pacing, tedious storytelling, and forgettable characters. While it may appeal to those with a specific interest in Mormon missionary work or the Liberian Civil War, the film ultimately fails to leave a lasting impact and is unlikely to be remembered among the pantheon of great cinematic achievements.

I thought there was no chance to watch a missionary based movie in which I cared less about the protagonists than the Saratov approach, but I found it with this movie. I almost didn’t make it all the way through it, it took several attempts to complete. It was 1:55 running time, but it could have been 25 minutes and not lost anything at all. I don’t use this term lightly, but I hated Freetown.

I honestly don’t know the reason why, I don’t know if this movie was not made for me, but I literally found it to be unwatchable, except for the two scenes that I showed to you. Perhaps it was the fact that the missionaries all seemed somewhat interchangeable, or the 50% of the movie spent in the car. The highlight of the movie for me, was when the end credits rolled.
