Dives Accepts Debate Challenge from Jacob Hansen: LDS Temples vs. Poverty Alleviation | Mormon News Roundup

Greetings brothers and sisters! Welcome to the Mormon News Roundup. I am your host, Dives, talent on loan from Kolob. Like and subscribe, and don’t forget to think celestial while you are at it.

In this special announcement, I’m officially accepting Jacob Hansen's debate challenge. Jacob, the creator and host of the "Thoughtful Faith" YouTube channel and podcast, is known for his strong opinions and engaging debates on faith within the Latter-day Saints (LDS) tradition. He's also been known to espouse anti-gay, anti-trans, and homophobic rhetoric in the name of his favorite God.

Jacob and I previously discussed the Mormon Church’s unprecedented global temple building spree in July 2023, episode 68 of the Mormon News Roundup:

During that program, Jacob made an incredible claim about LDS temples:

This clip became the most disliked short I have ever produced until it went viral, thanks to Cultch over at the Cultural Hall podcast:

Jacob challenged me to a debate in response to Cultch’s reposting. Although I haven't debated since my 9th grade speech class, and Jacob is a seasoned debater, I feel a moral obligation to address his claims.

Jacob asserts that building LDS temples is the single best way to alleviate poverty. However, I’ve never seen evidence connecting temple construction to poverty reduction. In fact, the financial resources allocated to temple construction are primarily for religious purposes, not economic development.

Here are some points we'll be addressing in the debate:
- No empirical evidence suggests that Mormon temples have a direct impact on alleviating poverty.
- Key strategies for fighting poverty include education, job creation, social safety nets, healthcare access, and affordable housing.

Jacob insists he has evidence supporting his claim but won't release it unless I agree to the debate. So, I'm formally accepting his challenge. We’ll iron out the details like the platform and moderator soon. Jacob will be accepting the burden of proof here.

I’m hesitant to platform Jacob due to his history of transphobic and homophobic rhetoric, but the importance of the debate’s topic compels me to proceed. I look forward to seeing the evidence and discussing this crucial issue.
