This review works best if you have seen this film before, though that is not required. Spoiler alert
"Sons of Provo" (2004) delivers a hilarious and irreverent take on the world of Mormon culture, cementing its status as one of the funniest entries in LDS comedy cinema. Directed by Will Swenson and starring Swenson alongside Peter D. Brown and Kirby Heyborne, the film follows the misadventures of the fictional boy band "Everclean" as they navigate the challenges of fame, friendship, and faith.
From its opening scenes to its uproarious climax, "Sons of Provo" is a non-stop rollercoaster of laughter, filled with witty one-liners, absurd situations, and memorable characters. Swenson, Brown, and Heyborne share an undeniable chemistry on screen, bringing their respective characters to life with infectious energy and impeccable comedic timing.
What sets "Sons of Provo" apart from other Mormon comedies is its willingness to poke fun at the idiosyncrasies of Mormon culture while still maintaining a sense of affection and reverence for its subject matter. Whether it's the band's hilariously earnest attempts to write a hit song about the Book of Mormon or their comically disastrous attempts at missionary work, the film never misses an opportunity to mine humor from the quirks and foibles of LDS life.
Furthermore, "Sons of Provo" boasts a catchy soundtrack filled with original songs that are as clever as they are catchy. From the infectious pop hooks of "Dang Girl" to the tongue-in-cheek humor of "Baptize Me," the music adds an extra layer of enjoyment to the viewing experience and helps to elevate the film beyond mere parody.
In conclusion, "Sons of Provo" is a must-watch for fans of comedy, whether they are familiar with Mormon culture or not. With its razor-sharp wit, lovable characters, and catchy tunes, the film delivers laughs in spades and cements its status as a cult classic in the world of LDS cinema. Highly recommended for anyone in need of a good laugh!
This awesome movie is in the vein of spinal tap. This is the funniest LDS related movie that I have ever seen. Every single scene is funny, it is literally a laugh a minute. I watched Sons of Provo several times for this review, and it seriously gets better every single time. I am just a huge fan and can’t say enough good things about director Will Sweson’s comedic LDS masterpiece.
I also adore the musical soundtrack. I recently shared it with my kids on the way to an appointment and they were hooked. The music is not just funny, it is really really good! They nailed the Boy Band genre. I’m an Everclean fan for life!
