Spoiler alert
Synopsis Forever Strong" is a compelling sports drama released in 2008, directed by Ryan Little. Set in Salt Lake City, Utah, the film centers around the Highland Rugby team and its coach, Larry Gelwix, played by Gary Cole. While the movie predominantly focuses on the themes of redemption, teamwork, and personal growth through sports, it subtly incorporates elements of Mormon culture and values.
The story follows the journey of Rick Penning, portrayed by Sean Faris, a talented but troubled young rugby player whose life takes a downward spiral due to his reckless behavior and involvement with drugs and alcohol. After a drunk driving accident lands him in juvenile detention, Rick is given a second chance when Coach Gelwix offers him the opportunity to join the Highland Rugby team, known for its disciplined and principled approach to the sport.
As Rick becomes part of the team, he is initially resistant to Gelwix's coaching methods, which emphasize integrity, discipline, and respect for others โ all values deeply rooted in Mormon teachings. However, as he immerses himself in the rigorous training and camaraderie of the team, Rick begins to undergo a profound transformation. He learns the importance of accountability, perseverance, and selflessness, gradually shedding his self-destructive tendencies and embracing a more positive outlook on life.
Throughout the film, subtle references to Mormon culture and beliefs are woven into the narrative, such as scenes depicting characters attending church services or participating in community events typical of Mormon congregations. Additionally, Coach Gelwix's leadership style reflects principles of service and mentorship often emphasized within the LDS Church.
Ultimately, "Forever Strong" is more than just a sports movie; it's a story about redemption, forgiveness, and the power of second chances. While the film's focus is primarily on rugby and the personal journey of its protagonist, its underlying themes of faith, family, and moral integrity reflect the influence of Mormon culture and values on the characters and their interactions.
Conclusion The whole package here is warmed-over mush from a hundred other sports movies, a tale padded out with game footage, training sequences, absurd coincidences, life lessons that teach nothing and wasted casting. Film relies on sports stereotypes and fails to capitalize on a promising and inspiring real life mormon story.
