Charly (2002)
Running time: 104 minutes

"Charly" is a touching 2002 romantic drama directed by Adam Thomas Anderegg, based on the beloved novel "Charly" by Jack Weyland. Set in the picturesque landscapes of Utah, the film tells the poignant story of two young adults, Sam and Charly, whose lives intersect in unexpected ways.

Sam Roberts, a shy and introverted college student, finds himself drawn to Charly Riley, a vivacious and free-spirited young woman who radiates joy and positivity despite facing challenges in her own life. Charly captivates Sam with her infectious zest for life and genuine kindness.

As Sam and Charly's friendship blossoms into a deep bond, they navigate the complexities of love, acceptance, and societal expectations. Despite facing skepticism and prejudice from those around them, Sam and Charly's connection proves to be genuine and transformative.

However, their relationship is put to the test when Charly's overprotective mother, Jane, expresses concerns about their growing closeness. Struggling to reconcile her fears with her daughter's happiness, Jane grapples with the idea of letting Charly pursue her own path and find love on her own terms.

Against the backdrop of Sam and Charly's budding romance, the film explores themes of compassion, inclusion, and the power of love to transcend barriers. Through their journey, Sam learns valuable lessons about empathy, courage, and the true meaning of acceptance.

"Charly" is a heartfelt and uplifting tale that celebrates the beauty of diversity and the resilience of the human spirit. With its stereotypical performances, contrived storytelling, and average cinematography, the film leaves a lasting impression, reminding audiences of the importance of embracing differences and cherishing the connections that enrich our lives.

Final Thoughts Would have worked better as a simple romantic comedy because the cancer section seemed forced. I do remember reading this book and it is a better read than a watch. I thought the on screen chemistry was good, and even though the movie was not well received by critics and has some cringey moments, this is perhaps the best mormon romance movie of all time.
